6 South African High School Students, Came Home With Great Results

Six South African high school students travelled to Bath in the United Kingdom for the 60th annual International Mathematical Olympiad, making SA proud! 

South Africa – South Africa’s Math team, is currently travelling back from the International Maths Olympiad in Bath and will arrive back in the country today. The team did really well and came back with the best results in the last 15 years. 

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. 

According to Magdel van der Walt, a very proud mom to one of the boys, the IMO is seen as the largest, most strenuous and prestigious olympiad in the world. This year was the 60th anniversary and more than a hundred countries participated. 

"The SA team are all high school learners and go through an extremely strenuous selection process before being chosen for the team. This year we achieved the best results in the past 15 years with 4 bronze medals and 2 honourable mentions.” 

"What I especially love about this team is that it so beautifully represents our diverse cultures. Truly a rainbow nation and a very clever one at that!” 

The six young men who represented South Africa at IMO in Bath were Taariq Mowzer from Fairbain College in Cape Town, Emil van der Walt from Hoërskool Jan van Riebeck in Cape Town, Aaron Naidu from Eden College in Durban, Andi Qu from St John’s in Johannesburg, Adri Wessels from Curro Durbanville and Kgaogelo Bopape from Horizon International in Johannesburg. 

The boys flew the South African flag high with pride and will come home to a very proud country.
